Getting to know who your presenting to is just as important as what you are presenting on, so read up about the event beforehand. Knowing your audiences’ age range, profession, background and similarities can greatly affect your presentation, and with that comes our next point:

If you are presenting to a crowd of professionals in your field, it is best to not give introductory or basic materials, or on the flip side, if you are presenting to a group of college students, a little context could do wonders for their understanding. As great as it is to make references that your audience will get, be sure to use them sparingly. You don’t want to lose your audience by trying to relate to them, so keep the presentation centered on your main point.
